New! Pregnancy & Postpartum Yoga Teacher Training

How to Enhance Your Online Class Experience

The yoga world is in a period of rapid transformation, as we see studios and teachers move their class offering online.  But what does this mean for your practice?  It won't come without it's own challenges but this new way of practising can really bring its own benefits:

  • It'll be easier to squeeze that class into a busy day without having to factor in travel to and from the studio or late returns home past dinner time.
  • No childcare? No problem!  Let your kids watch you practice. Let them join in.  Let them ask questions.  And if it ends with you all in a mess on the floor, let it be :)
  • Some folk can be anxious practising in a room with others.  Online practice means your classmates are with you in spirit but you can enjoy the solitude of a personal practice (unless of course you have kids... see above!)

So how do you maximise your online experience:

  • If possible create a designated practice space in a corner of your home.  Make it beautiful with...

An Update from Your Mysore Teacher, Emma Isokivi

Dear Mysore Practitioner,

As a Mysore teaching team, we are committed to helping you sustain and grow your regular yoga practice.

During this rapidly changing time, we are planning to keep our Mysore doors and hours open for as long as reasonable and safe.  We will update you regularly if this needs to change.

Maintaining your regular practice (whatever size/ shape/ or beyond asana that might be) is of the utmost importance in this challenging time.  It’s easy to push our wellbeing to the side during uncertain times, but this is the time to “double down” on your regular practices to be able to maintain steadiness and wellness for your body and mind.
We encourage you to:

- Practice at the same time as you normally do. (Tell family members/friends to give you space and support to do that if needed).
- Move regularly. Physical activity plays an important role in your boosting your immune system and...

Livestreaming: Our Timetable Goes Online

We are currently working on our Livestream capabilities to offer high-quality sound and video experiences of yoga classes and workshops live from the studio. This live-stream option will be offered in addition to the in-person experience of attending classes at our studio in Edinburgh.

Classes will be booked through MBO as normal, simply check our class timetable over the next few days you'll start to see our Livestream options appear.

Here's where we're at so far:

Vimeo Livestream will let us give our clients access to classes as we scale back our capacity on in-person attendance from 23/03/2020. We'll be using Vimeo Livestream for the March YTT weekends.

Zoom Webinar is a fantastic platform allowing our fellow yoga students to dial in and practice yoga from anywhere in the world, all in one virtual "room." Our intention is to use the Zoom format for widening our ability to practice together with those who are self-isolating. Zoom will also be our chosen platform for...

Safe, Steady, and Comfortable: Protocol for Yoga Teachers

Our community is pulling together around the continuing updates from the UK Government and the World Health Organisation (WHO) regarding the containment of COVID-19. As teachers and students of yoga, we are all wondering what is best practice for staying the course and staying safe?

Obviously, first principles start by following the advice provided by the GOV.uk website here, and the World Health Organisation as found here. We encourage everyone in our community to consult these resources regularly in order to make informed decisions.

In the interest of yoga practitioners and teachers continuing to practice during the containment of this virus, we have compiled a set of guidance notes for our teachers:

  • Use hand gel and offer it to students - make it an opening gesture.
  • Use verbal adjustments instead of getting hands-on - this is an opportunity to refine your teaching skills and protect personal space.
  • Maintain distance - sorry, no hugs!
  • Do not use studio...

Going Viral: Unprecedented action in the face of uncertainty

This is Karen Kirkness, owner and founding teacher of Meadowlark. I want to take this opportunity to speak to our community about the evolving circumstances around COVID-19. This is a personal message, as I take stock of the situation. It seems things are escalating very quickly, from nonchalantly dropping "use the hand gel" signs around the studio to seriously considering business survival strategies. And, as of now, we can't even get hand gel of any kind at all and it is becoming a source of real angst for people.

Truly, these are mercurial times even by my own change-happy standards. I only just started spelling 'coronavirus' correctly on Monday, now I'm researching live streaming platforms for our class timetable?! Many of us are dealing with a collective freak-out as we face up to the immediate economic realities that threaten to derail small businesses like ours. Panic-demic.

Meadowlark Yoga is a not-for-profit business built around the core idea that...

Keeping You On the Mat

community health studio yoga Mar 12, 2020

Our number one priority as we follow COVID-19 developments is to keep our staff, teachers, and students healthy and we know how important yoga is in that equation!

Here are our recommendations and actions to keep our community studio within government guidelines without foregoing our time on the mat:

  • Please refer regularly to this blog platform where we will be posting updates on our policies
  • Engage in live updates on social media - Instagram, Facebook & Twitter
  • At time of writing (12th March), all classes, courses & workshops continue to run as normal.  Please join us!
  • Please DO NOT attend classes in the studio if you are feeling unwell, displaying any cold or flu symptoms.  Late cancellation has been relaxed so do cancel out at any time if you are not well
  • If you attend a class in the studio please wash hands very thoroughly before and after class.  Please use hand sanitizers provided as you move through the studio
  • Please spray clean your mat after...

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Precautions

coronavirus covid19 Mar 11, 2020

We have been paying close attention to the development of Coronavirus (COVID-19) around the world and the subsequent government guidelines and precautionary measures.

Meadowlark Yoga continues to operate as normal, with our usual attention to detail for hygiene, cleanliness and client/staff well-being.  With that in mind we ask that our clients adhere to the NHS recommendations for self management with regards to hygiene, symptom checking and further precautions in the event of contracting the virus.  In summary, the following measures should be implemented:

  1. Stay at home if you are experiencing any cold/flu like symptoms.  We will for now be relaxing our cancellation policy so please do contact us at any time to cancel out if you're experiencing symptoms.
  2. Cover your nose & mouth when coughing or sneezing, ideally with a tissue.  Discard of tissue in our bathroom bins.
  3. Wash hands often and thoroughly with soap for a minimum...

Benefits of Cleansing

by Clare Fulton

Investing time and effort in Ayurvedic cleansing this Spring may seem like a drag. So why would you bother?

During winter, our bodies accumulate moist, heavy, sticky qualities (Ayurveda calls these gunas). These gunas are helpful in the winter to keep us warm, cosy and countering the harsh weather and dark days. However, as the spring flowers begin to show themselves (have you noticed them?) and the temperatures begin to rise, our bodies crave to let these attributes go. An Ayurvedic cleanse offers a gentle way to help shed the excess fat and mucus that has collected over the winter. Anything that is no longer needed, as we move towards the warmer weather of spring and summer is gently released.

Doing this cleansing practice at the winter/spring juncture brings myriad benefits. I always feel light, bright and clear after doing a spring cleanse. I have more energy and I’m no longer bothered by seasonal allergies. Cleansing like this is a preventative...
