I am a cross country mountain bike and cyclocross racer who competes regularly throughout the year. Most weeks I spend over 10 hours riding my bike. I was introduced to Ashtanga Yoga by a physio who recommended it as a way to improve my core strength and prevent injury on the bike.
Having never done any yoga, or been to any kind of exercise class for that matter, I was very apprehensive at first. My concerns didn’t last long past the initial ‘Really, I can’t do that!’ and it wasn’t long before I started to get the hang of a vinyasa and could feel I was getting stronger. I found yoga to be an excellent way to incorporate a structured core and strength session into my training. It’s a great way of getting a deep stretch too, and can be incredibly relaxing, sometimes leaving me feeling better than if I’d had a deep sports massage. I regularly attend a Vinyasa Power Yoga class, and it is often the hardest hour and a half in my training week. I still enjoy practising Ashtanga yoga and try to fit in a full led primary series when I can.
